Master acupuncturist Dianne Connelly has written a paean to healthy living. But the book is less about health than about wisdom. With her own definitions and explications of essential words to live by, with poetry such as filled her previous book, ALL SICKNESS IS HOME SICKNESS, and with personal stories from her own life and the lives of those she has treated, Dianne points the way to a life of spirit and courage. ~ Guy Hollyday, Environmentalist and acupuncturist
Medicine Words edition by Dianne Connelly Religion Spirituality eBooks
I've been a fan of Dianne Connelly ever since reading her wonderful book on Traditional Acupuncture thirty years ago. This book was enthusiastically recommended by my new acupuncturist, and after reading a few chapters, I enthusiastically bought a copy for a friend. It is full of hope, optimism and wisdom and has rich personal stories. However, my enthusiasm began to wane as her later chapters began to strike me as somewhat precious and forced. I was put off by her repeatedly pushing her point of view about the finality of death. Not just once - she has the need to hammer home her opinion that death is it - curtains, period!
This seemed unnecessary and for me it detracted from her otherwise upbeat message. A belief in a some kind of afterlife is inherent in Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Taoism, Confucianism and in most forms of Buddhism. Why undermine a faith that can contribute much support in the face of adversity? Why not just leave this possibly contentious subject alone?
If I'd stopped reading after the first 5 or 6 chapters, I'd have given the book 5 stars.

Medicine Words edition by Dianne Connelly Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
I am at a loss for awhile everytime I read Diane Connelly's books -- "All Sickness is Homesickness" and this newer one -- Medicine Words. My own words and thoughts about words come to a complete halt. A pause. A pleasant one at that. And when they return it is with a new awe about the simple, deep and extraordinarily powerful capacity of words and relationship to heal, to create, and to BE more fully.
This new book was clearly worth the waiting. I am inspired to listen more deeply before speaking, searching for ways that I can use my own words to myself and all those I meet with more intention and healing quality.
The author's gift with language is ... just that. A gift with capacity to bring together rather than divide healers from each other, from their clients, from their friends, from their world. Most of all, she provides a convincing case through her own honesty and vulnerability that this gift is open to us all...if we claim it.
I don't know her personally at all. This book makes me feel as if we have met deeply in a place of spirit. It accomplishes what is normally pretty rare for me -- the desire to actually meet an author. And surprisingly, she seems to have intended this meeting for all her readers, regardless of their faith, their hopes, their wounds, their dreams. From this meeting ... rich and wonderful possibilities are waiting.
Just maybe our world leaders need to be gifted with this book as well.
I LOVE THIS BOOK!
...a total reset for me, and so packed with wisdom, and interesting that it was written 15 years ago, but feels spot on for the oppositional US vs. THEM nature of today's national conversations. Best 10$ I have spent in a long long time.
